How to choose a portable air conditioner ?

Portable air conditioners offer more flexibility than other window or through-the-wall air conditioners. Portable air conditioners have wheels and are compact (usually 2' - 3' tall). Condensation is either collected in a bucket, redistributed through a hole, or recycled through the air. Even though portable air conditioners are easily moved, the hot air needs to vent to the outside. A hose, usually 3” to 5” in diameter, attaches to the air conditioner then vents through a window, sliding door, wall or ceiling.

Portable air conditioners are self- contained, freestanding units. Most have casters, so they can be wheeled around to the room or rooms that need to be cooled. They come with a large, flexible hose that is attached to a window for exhausting hot air, much like the way a clothes dryer is vented. Though the appliances tend to cost more than window and through-the-wall units, they are much easier to install and practical because of their portability.

The main advantage of the portable system is its portability and flexibility. You can move the portable unit very quickly from room to another without much effort. They are excellent for providing emergency cooling when your primary AC system is down. For small rooms or additions, the portable unit can supply cool air in places that your existing central air system does not reach. The portable AC units are also the cheapest cooling system available.

Portable units are excellent for emergency or temporarily cooling. For small spaces that you don't occupy often, the portable unit is a great choice to keep those locations cool.
